What is Indexed Universal Life?

IUL is a type of permanent life insurance — it's designed to last your entire life. Like all permanent policies it has two parts: a death benefit that protects your family, and a cash value account that can grow over time. What makes IUL distinct is how that cash value grows.

How the cash value grows

Instead of earning a fixed rate, an IUL's cash value is credited interest based on the performance of a market index (such as the S&P 500®). But your money isn't actually invested in the market — the insurer simply uses the index as a measuring stick. Two features shape your return:

  • Floor — a guaranteed minimum (often 0%). In a year the index drops, your cash value doesn't lose money to market declines.
  • Cap or participation rate — a ceiling on how much of the index's gain is credited in a strong year.
The trade-off in one line: you give up some of the market's biggest upside (the cap) in exchange for protection against its downside (the floor). Gains are limited, but losses from market drops are not passed to you.

Flexibility you can adjust over time

The "universal" part means the policy is flexible. Within limits, you can:

  • Adjust your premium payments up or down over time.
  • Adjust the death benefit as your needs change.
  • Access cash value through loans or withdrawals, which can be a source of tax-advantaged supplemental income later in life.

The benefits

  • Lifelong protection that doesn't expire like term insurance.
  • Growth potential tied to an index, with downside protection via the floor.
  • Tax advantages — cash value grows tax-deferred, and policy loans are generally not taxed when structured properly.
  • Flexibility to adapt the policy as your life changes.

Things to consider

IUL is powerful but more complex than term, and it isn't for everyone. Keep in mind:

  • Premiums are higher than term for the same death benefit.
  • Caps and participation rates can change over time, and returns are not guaranteed above the floor.
  • Policy costs and fees come out of the cash value, so the policy needs to be funded and managed thoughtfully.
  • It works best as a long-term strategy — the cash value needs years to build momentum.

Who it's a good fit for

IUL often appeals to people who have already covered their basics (emergency fund, retirement accounts) and want permanent coverage plus a tax-advantaged place to build value — for example, higher earners looking for additional tax-deferred growth, business owners, or parents planning for the long haul.

Frequently asked

Is my money invested in the stock market?

No. Your cash value isn't directly invested. The insurer credits interest based on an index's performance, with a floor and a cap, so you're insulated from direct market losses.

Can I lose money in a down year?

Market declines won't reduce your credited interest below the floor (often 0%). However, policy fees and costs are still deducted, so the account must be funded adequately.

How do I access the cash value?

Through withdrawals or policy loans. When structured correctly, loans can provide tax-advantaged income — a strategy we can walk through with you.

Is IUL better than term?

Neither is "better" — they solve different problems. Term is cheap, temporary protection; IUL is lifelong protection with a growth and flexibility component. Many people own both.
